CONNECTING WITH KABBALAH enlighten me

Growing up, I saw that Kabbalists are people of action, busy building a better life for themselves and others: strengthening their relationships, living with more joy and prosperity, less chaos and suffering.

The word Kabbalah means “to receive.” The question is, what is it we’re meant to receive? Think about it. What do you really want to receive? What are your true desires?

Most people say they want joy and pleasure, inner peace, financial security, independence, and freedom from fears and anxiety. These are things that cannot be weighed on a scale, nor located in physical space. Our eyes can’t see them; our ears can’t hear them. Even financial security is a feeling, not a stockpile of cash. After all, many people have lots of cash and little financial security.

We all have so many dreams about what would really make us happy. A good friend of mine thought he wanted to be a musician. He had dreams of playing in front of thousands of people and being famous. By the time he was in his early twenties, sure enough, he was playing in bands, sometimes in arenas in front of 60,000 people. You know what? After a while, every tour that he went on, every downtown he went to, looked the same. At the end of the day, every hotel room looked the same. He would have people screaming his name when he was on stage, then, when the lights went out, people went home and he was left feeling empty and alone.

It’s amazing how something we think is going to give us so much excitement soon burns out. Which leads us to the first secret of Kabbalah: the very essence of what a human being truly wants is of a non-physical nature.

According to Kabbalah, there are two distinct realms -- the physical and the non-physical.

There’s the reality we see and perceive with our five senses. Kabbalists call this the realm of the 1 Percent -- a world of chaos, ups and downs, trial and error. Living in the 1 Percent Reality is a bit like trying to go through life with blinders on: we only see what’s in front of us and we keep stumbling across challenges in life.

But the 1 Percent is like an iceberg. When you see an iceberg, you’re seeing maybe the tip of the iceberg, maybe one-tenth of it. The bulk of the iceberg, the stuff that we don’t see, the stuff that exists beneath the surface of our everyday 1 Percent Reality, Kabbalists refer to as the 99 Percent.

The 99 Percent Reality is a realm of absolute order, fulfillment, and total knowledge. All the precious qualities of life that we really want originate in the 99 Percent. That’s what Kabbalah says we are meant to receive.

We’ve all had experiences where we glimpse the realm that lies beyond our five senses. A dream that comes true. Knowing who’s calling on the phone before you answer it. Humming a piece of music before it’s played on the radio.

Throughout history, many of the great scientific minds, like Einstein, said mystical insight led to their greatest scientific achievements. The same is true in the arts. Mozart was able to “seize at a glance” an entire symphony before he wrote it down. And that’s what our search for fulfillment comes from: we are trying to connect to that energy of fulfillment, the 99 Percent Reality.

Why do any of us start on a search for something? Sometimes, it is because we have questions that need answers, we recognize negative behavior that we want to correct, we want to meet our soul mate, we want to know what else is out there, we wonder if there is more to life than what we already know.

The common human factor is that, in our own way, we all have a desire to make life better. If we’re really honest with ourselves about what we want, it’s about what in our life can create lasting fulfillment.

The history of Kabbalah goes way back to the beginning of the creation of the universe. It’s information that was handed to us thousands of years ago and has been passed down from generation to generation to generation through a lot of pain and suffering so that, today, we don’t need to suffer. Today, we don’t need to hide in caves to study Kabbalah. We can simply decide we want this wisdom and we want to use the practical tools of Kabbalah that generate real life changes.

One of the profound reasons I devote my life’s work to helping people understand the wisdom of Kabbalah is because there is a purpose to it. The purpose is to remove pain and suffering in the world, to remove chaos and to give people tools to truly fulfill their desires.

Who doesn’t want to be a part of that?

EVER SINCE I WAS A CHILD, I STUDIED KABBALAH AT THE FEET OF MY FATHER AND TEACHER, KABBALIST RAV BERG. What do you want in life?
