But the term ‘hotel’ is far too misleading.  A content-rich 110-year history of two mansion houses set high on a hilltop overlooking Kuala Lumpur, have housed and hosted High Commissioners, Sultans, Resident-Generals, Japanese Military Officers, Queens and Presidents – birthing one of the most extraordinary accommodation and event facilities on our planet today.

Built in 1896 by Sir Frank Swettenham; the first Resident-General of the Federated Malays States, these two spectacular mansions are set on 16 ‘English Estate’ type acres, but with the balmy influence of the tropics and its lush green foliage.
CARCOSA SERI NEGARA

Walking the path of Royalty History Rich...
From 1904 until 1941; Carcosa was the official residence of the highest British representatives to the Malay States. Sultans and Malay leaders met and stayed here, with wonderful paintings depicting the monumental events and times adorning the walls.

But then, during World War II, Carcosa became the Japanese Senior Officers’ Army Mess. It is impossible to walk these grounds and not conjure images and thoughts of those difficult times. After the war from August 1945, it reverted to the British Government’s Senior Offices until a Chief Secretary was appointed. ‘Malaya’ became independent in 1957, and so Carcosa became the official residence of the British High Commissioner, while the King’s House, the complimentary guest mansion built a few years later, and now known as Seri Negara, became the official guesthouse for Malaysia’s most important visitors.

A Road Less Traveled
Our world is in a rush. Fast and furious. Glamorous hotels with 400 plus rooms for guests and events. Airlines work hand-in-hand, shuttling passengers at capacity levels to and fro … and airports take in millions of transiting passengers. And even Kuala Lumpur is a city that never sleeps. Yet, for the most discerning guest who seeks to break free from the ordinary and rushed lifestyle, there is Carcosa Seri Negara.

Under the gaze of the portraits of The Queen and Prince of Britain, the King and Queen of Malaysia and within the richness of the historical Victorian mansions, you can relax in a world apart! Imagine full service breakfast with silver on white linen on the wide verandahs of Seri Negara, served by warm Malaysian staff, influenced with the soft wafting of overhead fans, birds singing and morning light filtering through palm fronds. One of the world’s best-kept hotel secrets is Carcosa Seri Negara in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. In the Presence of Royalty
In 1987, Carcosa was officially returned to the Government of Malaysia, and in 1989, after HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh stayed at Carcosa during the meeting of the Commonwealth nations (Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting), both mansions were then administered together forming what is now called Carcosa Seri Negara.

This elegant and majestic dining room overlooks the sweeping verandah of the verdant gardens beyond.

But, you are in Malaysia, so here also is the ‘must visit’ restaurant; The Gulai House, serving Malay cuisine in a less formal environment. The Master Chef has created mouth-watering classics including sup ketam (local flower crab soup), kari ayam daun limau purut (mild chicken curry with lime leaf) and pulut pandan nangka madu bersalai (honey jack fruit stuffed with caramelized glutinous rice served with coconut milk and palm sugar syrup).

Puteri Gulai is a wonderful main course of pan-fried Ruby Snapper which won Siti Ummir Quois the Silver Medal in the 9th Penang International Salon Gastronomique 2003 under the Hot Asian Live Cooking category. This, you must also try! High Tea – Enjoying the Past... Today
Visitors come from far to enjoy the English afternoon tea, served in the elegant Drawing Room or on the verandah overlooking the beautiful gardens. The Impress Factor
Carcosa provides something extra that other hotels cannot in their conferences, banquets and functions. The same ‘extra’ you would get when arriving in a Rolls Royce. It is ‘the impress factor’.
