Journée à l’ancienne
by Chanel Emmanuelle Lallouz
n
he morning air was crisp. The sun shone brilliantly. It felt as if I were Audrey Hepburn in ‘My Fair Lady’ dressed in a floral styled hat and traditional costume. The horse-drawn carriage ride revealed breathtaking countryside scenery. A beautiful day lay ahead in Provence...

As our buggy came to a stop at the grazing grounds, everyone appeared in folklore styled costumes. The men looking handsome and rugged in their cowboy getup. The women, charmingly feminine in lovely frock with pretty fans or umbrellas. And of course... the children, running around excitedly in their costumes, too!

arbecues were being prepared for the traditional picnic lunch of mouth-watering ‘Saucise de Toulouse’, and grilled ‘Camembert cheese’ accompanied by home baked bread and a beautiful ‘Rosé’ wine to complete the  meal. Exquisite!

ext, the women were off exploring in search of collecting bouquets of ‘Saladelle’, the Provence flower. Year after year, they gather bouquets to keep in their home for good fortune. At the end of the year, it must be burned and replaced with new saladelle.

he ‘Guardians’ select bulls from the herd of the grazing grounds, and ride back to the town with them. Aside from the magnificent ‘Toros’ are ‘Camargue’ horses. Despite their smaller size, they are more than able to carry grown men on their backs.

he time comes for us to get back onto the horse and buggy and ride back to town.  Upon reaching the village square,   we were first to ride into the bullring arena. A crowd of spectators gathered, hundreds, perhaps even thousands cheering our arrival. Soon others follow suit, dressed for the occasion. They entered the ring on antique bicycles, in vintage cars, by carriage or even on horseback!

Camargue horse-drawn carriage ride, mouth-watering picnic lunch, a bouquet of lucky lavender saladelle, incredible costumes, a bull ring show, and the company of wonderful people.

Unity of such a festive occasion creates opportunity for an exciting and culturally enriching experience. It’s ‘Journée à l’ancienne’ in Camargue!
